This case focuses on the social businesses at Pohang Iron and Steel (POSCO), one of South Korea’s leading steel manufacturers. In 2007, the Korean government began certifying social enterprises with the distinct mission of promoting sustainable employment for the disadvantaged. Each one of POSCO’s social businesses was started by large investments from the company, and the new legislation now calls for these social businesses to be self-sufficient.
In this case, readers are confronted with the unique challenges that exist in this new world of government certified corporate social responsibility (CSR) in South Korea. The case focuses on four social enterprises launched by POSCO: POSWITH, POS ECO HOUSING, POSCO SONGDO SE and POSCO SMILE Micro Financing. Through the lens of these specific businesses, the case takes readers through the collective challenge they face to become self-sufficient. It discusses the key performance indicators (KPIs) that are necessary to evaluate enterprises that strive to achieve social and commercial objectives.
